Web design is a great way to make money. Website design can either be used to create sites for yourself or for someone else. You can work on websites whenever you want, allowing you the freedom to work at any time.
The graphics you use are important. Keep in mind that PNGs are much better than large and poorly working bitmap images. Try using PNGs for images that are not photos or text buttons or if an image has over 256 colors. Use GIFs for something with less than 256 colors. For photos, you can use JPEG images.
Look at the site you are designing in many different browsers. What you see might not be what users will see. Be sure you research all of the popular browsers that people are using and then design accordingly. You will want to have a person using a different computer operating system check on your site as well.
If users want to, let them cancel an action. For example, put a “clear” button on a form, an unsubscribe link on all newsletters and a “cancel” button on orders. If you don’t give visitors the opportunity to cancel their actions, you are depriving them of control, and that can prove fatal to your website.
Is your site easy to scan? Studies have shown that people usually quickly scan a website rather than thoroughly read it over, as they try to find the stuff that might be interesting to them. Break text into small, easy to scan sections to help readers quickly find the information they are looking for. It is also important that the key information is at the top of each page. This can help you make sure your visitors have a better experience since they can easily find what they’re looking for.
Always provide text content for links when you set up the design of your website. This content tells the visitor what the link is. Any links on your website should contain text because links without text can be accidentally selected without the viewer’s knowing.
Test early and frequently. Perform usability tests in the early stages of designing your website. Improve your site with every chance you get.
Practice by designing small websites to see where your strengths and weaknesses are. If you begin by creating only a few pages, it will be easier to gradually build your confidence.
Buying books on web design is money well spent. Just keep in mind that since you are new to the web page design world, you want to start out with the basics and build from there. Avoid skipping any steps and learn at your own pace, so you can eventually become a great web designer.
Use good looking graphics throughout your website. You will want text to wrap around pictures so it isn’t boring. When readers see that a website took time and effort to create, they are more likely to spend time or money with that site.
Use keywords in the tagline for you domain and sub-domain names. Keywords will make your website more relevant to search engines and increase traffic to your site. This tagline let’s people know what the page is about and whether or not they should stay there or not.
Captchas are great for user registration, but beyond this, they should be avoided at all costs. Being forced to use a Captcha frustrates users, as they simply want to use the website. Captchas are especially frustrating for website users with visual and hearing difficulties. Unless this visitor is already a dedicated follower, they’re probably just going to click their browser towards another corner of the Internet.
With all that you learned throughout this article, you should now have a better idea about what you should be doing when it comes to website design. By using what you have learned here you can build a website with confidence.
