Websites are not the same, no matter how similar they appear. For instance, take a glance at Facebook and then look at a hosted site such as Yahoo or Google. The difference between the two sorts of sites will be quite clear, and you should be aware that thoughtful website design is responsible for that difference. Use graphics that are right for your website. Keep in mind that bitmap images are not usually the best type of images to use. Try PNGs instead. PNG should be used for buttons with text and screenshots that have 256 colors or more. For photographs, opt for JPEGs.
Using a fixed position navigation will help your users use it with ease. This means that when the visitor goes down your page, the navigation panel will be locked. It benefits virtually everyone who will visit your site.
Choose your color scheme wisely. The text on your web pages, in particular, needs to be clear and easy to read on the colors you choose for your backgrounds. It is typically easier to see darker lettering that is set upon light backgrounds than the reverse. If you aren’t sure if your color scheme works well, show it off to a friend for some feedback.
Always give viewers the option to cancel a current action. For example, put a “clear” button on a form, an unsubscribe link on all newsletters and a “cancel” button on orders. If you do not give your users the option to cancel something, then you are making them do something, which can cause users to be leery of making future purchases or coming back to your website at all.
Be aware of the background on your website. You don’t want your text to be hard to read! A distracting background is…well, distracting. Select backgrounds that work in harmony with the site, not in competition with it, and visitors will find your material much more accessible and useful.
Utilize newsletters if you want repeat visitors. Giving your customers the opportunity to receive promotions, updates, or other news in their inboxes can encourage them to return. Place a signup form on your site in a sidebar, while maintaining a list of everyone who signs up. Your newsletter should only go out to those who specifically request to receive it, or you run the risk of turning off your customers.
Add pictures to your site to make it look better It makes you seem more friendly that way. People like to look at pictures, so they will probably spend more time on your site.
New web designers who are aiming to create an appealing website, should utilize Photoshop. This software will ensure that you have all the effects and tools you need to create graphics which look like they were completed by a pro. Building a site from scratch can be overwhelming for amateur designers, so take advantage of design tools and programs that can do some of the heavy lifting for you.
Don’t use frames if you want to optimize your website. While visitors to your site may enjoy the pages that have frames, search engines do not pick up the information contained within frames. This will preclude you from having a positive ranking. Your ranking is often what determines the number of visitors you have.
Good websites are optimized for older IE browsers, like 7 and 8. Most people have a love-hate relationship with IE; however, many people are still using it, including older versions. They don’t render pages that have to do with regular standards on the web so you have to figure out a work around. Specifically, read about the “box model bug” that plagued IE for years.
It is unlikely that you will be able to make a site like Facebook or Twitter. Sadly, the odds are not in your favor. The great reality though, is that solid design skills will help you design sites that are very attractive and work well. Your sites will be able to function just as perfectly as sites of those with much higher budgets. The above advice will help you get started, so begin brainstorming!
