Speed is everything when it comes to the Internet, so make sure that you keep your website’s loading time to a minimum. If a visitor to your site has to wait minutes for pages to laod, they’ll get bored and go elsewhere.
One critical part of great website design is ease of navigation. Links should be displayed where users will find them easily. Another way to provide easy navigation is to incorporate menus. Post links that lead back to the homepage on each page of your website to make navigation easier for your users.
Keep your website fresh and free of dated content. For example, if your webpage is filled with advertising for something that happened months ago, viewers will turn away. Viewers want to know that they are getting up-to-date information, and lack of attention in removing old products will not install this faith. Review your website often, to remove anything which isn’t updated with the latest content.
When designing a large website, include the ability to search throughout the site. Place a search box in the top right corner on the home page where users can search for a term that may appear on your site. FreeFind and Google both distribute a search function which you can use on your site.
Always provide site visitors with an option to offer feedback. This will let them communicate with you if they feel something is missing, or they do not understand what they see on your webpage, and you will be able to fix it. If your site visitors feel actively involved in the process, they will be return viewers.
Do not allow pop-up windows on your site. While these might seem valuable in some instances, most people think they are rather annoying. If customers see these popups and get frustrated, they may not come back to your site.
Before you start promoting your site, test it on several different browsers. Your site may look quite different on different browsers, so don’t be caught unawares! Utilize the Internet by researching which browsers are the most commonly used. Make sure to beta-test your site on all popular browsers, including those used on mobile devices.
Always opt for fonts that area crisp and easy to read. You can see if a site looks professional by looking at the fonts. Do not employ exotic fonts that will be absent from many visitors’ computers or over-used fonts such as Comic Sans. If a person doesn’t have a font on their computer, the browser might render the site using the default font (generally Times New Roman). Sometimes this looks worse, but often times it helps the reader who otherwise may not have been able to read your website clearly.
